Jules, yours isn't a bad beat. FH or quads he still wins and he had 4 outs with both the turn and river to come. There are a lot worse than this on poker.

4 outs gives him about 16% chance to make it by the river or odds of about 5.25 to 1, a massive dog. That was a bad beat in my book.
