I like that reply English. I've tried to help a few with food & such. My Father owned a grill & bar at one time so I was in position to be helpful. Unfortunatly lately I can't think of anyone I've tried to help. Good question Tiger makes me think if my priorities are really in the right place.

On a bike trip out west, we stopped at a little cafe near Laramie, Wyoming for breakfast. The cafe was a bit tired and run down...but the folks at the gas station said they had the best food around. We were seated in a table in the corner. We all noticed the ballons and streamers in the decorating the cafe and a huge posterboard that read "Happy retirement Ethyl!!" Our waitress cam up to take our order...it was Ethyl, she sayes to us, "What can i get for you grubby punks?!". She was quite surly and looked every bit of 70 years old. I asked her how many years has she worked here....she laughed and said "before the mountans rose here". We all laughed, then she 66years......66 YEARS!!! I asked her how old was she when she started here started here. she said just turned 18 after the birth of my first of twelve childeren. We were STUNNED!! She was 84 years old!! My buddy asked why she would still be here as a waitress for that long, and why she didn't retire before now. She exclaimed that "My Children and my work define who I am. Would you ever quit being a mother or a father?...NO, so why would I want to quit work, just to stop working?" This lady was remarkable! She was definately slower than the rest of the waitstaff, but she was sharp as a knife. She then tells us, "If it were not for the new owner of the cafe telling her 3 years ago that she could not work here past 85", she would never leave. After were ordered and the food arrived, we couldn't help but notice what an outstanding waitress she was...everything was picked up by her {no busboys here}, drinks refilled without notice, always looking at the table to see if something needed to be attended to. After we finished eating an we were talking about the bill and her tip. The bill was $34 and change. i told the guys i'm tipping her $100.00 and here is my $8.50 for my portion. the guys looked at me strange. I told them "This lady worked her whole life here, and this is her last day of over 64 years here, why not!!" My Biker friends all left $100.00 each to her. We left a $400.00 tip and a note on the back of the $34.00 bill. The note said, "You are an insipartion for all that is right in this world, happy retirement, the Grubby Punks". We knew that if she would probably not except that tip if she saw it there before we left, so we left it under an over turned coffee cup saucer.....and quickly exited. We all jumped on our bikes, fired them up and started to leave when Ethyl BOLTS out of the door in our direction waving the money and screaming at us to stop!!! We then blew out of there waving back as we left. As we got about a 1/8 mile down the road i looked back to see her hands over her face and slightly bent over, clearly she was touched. The chance meeting on that day, for that hour, that ladies life will forever be apart of me. God Bless the Ethyls of this world.
