Discuss: Folding to balance table size during tourneys

Hello friends. An issue has been raised regarding the ethics of folding to the BB as a strategy to balance tables when a discrepancy exists in the number of players at different tables during a tournament. In my experience in a real tournament such a lack of parity in player numbers would be corrected by the host by moving players until a reasonable balance was achieved. Gpokr seems to have a problem with this. Here's what happened today: during Members 10K i noticed the table at which I was sitting had 4 players compared to 8 at the other table. At the time I believe I was high stacked. I recommended we start folding to the BB until the other table lost some players. We all agreed but it took a while, longer than usual. I've done this a number of times and no one has raised an objection until today when it became clear that that some not agree that this is a fair strategy. I don't want to continue to do this if it is upsetting. I will say however that it is upsetting to me be sitting at a table with 3 players and the other tables has 2x or more players and I'm getting hit with blinds 2/3rds of the hands.

So friends, what say you? Is folding to the BB unethical or not?

Totally agree Star, balanced tables is much fairer. Woiuld hate to think anyone thought this is 'cheating' or anything!

Would be interested in a mods input on this one :)

Agreed that unbalanced tourney tables are a problem and your solution is workable if ALL players agree and abide by it. Problem is that with some of the complete tools we have here, enforcement is a problem. What was the main objection raised to this strategy?

First you guys werent folding cause you werent even playing, you all sat out and you were all high stacked compared to half of the players at other table, so I really think that balances out, different when you have two players left at table but 4 high stacked I find it a form of cheating. As I said to you guys is that the only way you can win by cheating. Couple wanted to start playing but you encouraged them to keep sitting away by continuing to sit out and they didnt want to steal blinds. Alcaide and I sat out for the reason when tourney first started there was two at one table and 9 at other. But play the way you want, it isnt real poker its gpokr but do play, not sit away. I go with unethical especially under the earlier circumstances.

mads i am fine with any decision the group makes. I thought i was doing a favor as i was high stacked and could have easily bullied the others. Didn't mean to and don't want to cheat.

I fully understand the fact about the tables not being balanced, but the fact that all of you sat out made it totally one sided in each of your benefits. You ask what benefit, each of you made it to the final table, while the other table actually played hands they were dealt. What if next time every table sat out.....hmmmmm would the tourney ever end.

Actually Robin that did come up, and yes that was the point others at the larger table including the small stacks were playing. Star since when has you being high stacked stopped you from bullying or playing in the past. But as said before play as you want.

That's right Robin, its a guaranteed way to make it to the final table so yeah I have problems with that aspect of it.

The solution to unbalanced tables we came up with the other day when we had 3 and the other 8 players was to play slowly, letting the timer run to 2/3rds before making any action.

In real tournies yes there is table balancing and when it gets close to payouts (often 50 or more ppl) or when it get near final table then its played hand for hand and tables all wait til the others finish a hand before another is dealt.

The issue has been mentioned before to Ryan but sadly I dont see any action being taken on it.

so TLP what I hear you saying is that the real pickle for being at a small table is the rapidity of being hit with blinds. And your solution is to slow the rate of play - yet while still playing and not just folding - to a tempo that more or less equals the rate of the bigger table.

Sounds good to me.
